Ingredients:
- Potatoes (as many as you want to make fries from, preferably firm and starchy varieties like Russet potatoes)
- Salt, to taste
- Vegetable oil for frying (or your preferred frying oil)
Equipment:
- Homtone 11-in-1 Food Processor
- A large bowl
- A slotted spoon or spider strainer
- A baking sheet lined with paper towels (for draining the fries)
- A deep frying pan or a deep fryer
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes
Wash the potatoes thoroughly under running water to remove any dirt or debris. You can choose to peel the potatoes if you prefer, but leaving the skin on is also an option for a more rustic look and added nutrients. Pat the potatoes dry with a clean kitchen towel.
Step 2: Set Up the Food Processor
Ensure the Homtone food processor is placed on a stable surface. First, align the knob on the food processor to "0" and wait for the screen light to flash. Then, turn the knob to "M" and manually touch the screen to select the appropriate preset mode. For making French fries, we will use the "french fried potato julienne disc" which is one of the multi-functional accessories included with the food processor. Attach the julienne disc to the food processor according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Step 3: Slice the Potatoes
Cut the potatoes into appropriate lengths that can fit into the feed slot of the food processor. Insert the potatoes into the feed slot one by one, using the 3-in-1 pusher to guide them through the slicing process. Make sure the pins of the pusher are inserted into the bowl to activate the system. Continue slicing all the prepared potatoes until you have the desired amount of French fry strips.
Step 4: Soak the Fries
Transfer the sliced French fries into a large bowl filled with cold water. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes. This helps to remove excess starch from the potatoes, which will result in crispier fries. After soaking, drain the water and pat the fries dry with a clean kitchen towel or paper towels.
Step 5: Fry the Fries
Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep frying pan or a deep fryer over medium-high heat. To check if the oil is hot enough, you can drop a small piece of potato into the oil. If it sizzles immediately, the oil is ready. Carefully add a batch of the dried French fries into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry the fries for about 3-4 minutes, or until they are lightly golden and just starting to crisp up. Use a slotted spoon or spider strainer to remove the fries from the oil and transfer them to the baking sheet lined with paper towels. Repeat this process for the remaining batches of fries.
Step 6: Season and Enjoy
Sprinkle the fried French fries with salt while they are still hot. You can also add other seasonings like pepper, garlic powder, or paprika according to your taste preferences. Serve the French fries immediately and enjoy!
Tips for Making Perfect French Fries with the Homtone Food Processor:
- Make sure the potatoes are cut into uniform sizes so that they cook evenly during the frying process.
- Don't skip the soaking step as it significantly affects the crispiness of the fries. If you're short on time, you can rinse the sliced fries under cold running water for a few minutes instead of soaking, but soaking is more effective.
- When frying, maintain a consistent oil temperature. If the oil is too hot, the fries will brown too quickly on the outside and remain undercooked on the inside. If the oil is not hot enough, the fries will absorb more oil and become greasy.
- After using the food processor, you can take advantage of the "Auto Clean" preset mode. However, if there are stubborn bits of potato stuck to the blades or the bowl, you can also disassemble the parts (except the base) and wash them in a dishwasher. Just remember that the water temperature in the dishwasher must not exceed 140°F and add the right amount of detergent.
- If you want to make a larger batch of fries, you can store the sliced and soaked (then dried) fries in the refrigerator for a short time until you're ready to fry them. Just make sure they are well-covered to prevent them from drying out.
