Ingredients:

  • 4 slices of pita bread: Choose whole wheat or regular, depending on your preference.
  • 1/2 cup hummus: Store-bought or homemade. Ensure it's at room temperature for easy spreading.
  • 1 tablespoon za'atar spice mix: A Middle Eastern spice blend typically made with thyme, sumac, and sesame seeds.

Equipment:

  • Homtone pizza oven with toast function.
  • Baking sheet or enameled baking tray.
  • Tongs or oven mitts for handling hot trays.
  • Serving plate.

Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the Hummus
Spread Hummus: Using a knife or a spreader, evenly spread a layer of hummus on each slice of pita bread. If your hummus is particularly thick, you might want to thin it slightly with a bit of water or olive oil for easier spreading.

Step 2: Season with Za'atar
Sprinkle Za'atar: Evenly sprinkle the za'atar spice mix over the hummus on each slice of pita bread. You can adjust the amount based on how strong you like the za'atar flavor.

Step 3: Toast the Bread
Place in Oven: Arrange the prepared pita slices on your baking sheet or enameled baking tray.
Set: Set your oven to the TOAST function at 375°F (190°C). This temperature will give the pita bread a nice toast without burning it.
Toast: Put the tray in the oven and toast for 5-7 minutes, or until the edges of the pita bread are golden brown and crispy. Keep an eye on the toast to ensure it doesn't burn, as ovens can vary in temperature.

Step 4: Check and Serve
Check for Doneness: After 5-7 minutes, check the toast for a golden brown color and a crispy texture.
Serve: Remove the toast from the oven and let it cool for a minute. Then, transfer the hummus and za'atar toast to a serving plate.

Tips for Hummus and Za'atar Toast:

  • Hummus Consistency: Ensure your hummus isn't too thick, as it will be harder to spread on the bread.
  • Za'atar Flavor: Za'atar can be quite potent, so start with a small amount and adjust to taste.
  • Oven Temperature: Keep an eye on the toast to ensure it doesn't burn. You may need to adjust the time slightly depending on your oven.
  • Presentation: For a more visually appealing dish, you can also add a drizzle of olive oil or a sprinkle of fresh parsley on top.
